Why We Love Aerial Sling

Sling is one of our favorite apparatuses because it’s accessible, therapeutic, and versatile!

Aerial sling is one of our favorite apparatuses here at Fly Freak. It shines as an accessible, therapeutic, and versatile piece of equipment that can be used for fun aerial tricks, physical therapy, strength building, improving flexibility, spinal decompression, and more!

In many ways, aerial sling is the most accessible aerial apparatus out there, making it perfect for beginners. Sling, fabric, or hammock are the common terms for a single piece of wide, silky fabric that hangs from the ceiling. The loop at the bottom of sling helps to support your weight, so it requires less grip strength. This makes it the perfect apparatus to learn basic aerial skills and beyond! It’s also a great gateway apparatus to build strength before progressing onto silks, lyra, trapeze, rope, or pole. Sling students can learn and perform fun poses in their very first class with no prior experience. Because it is made of soft fabric, many new students find it to be much more comfortable than harder apparatuses like lyra and trapeze while their bodies adjust to new sensations and movements.

Sling offers a lot of therapeutic benefits that can’t easily be achieved on other aerial apparatuses. Thanks to the support of the fabric, aerial yoga classes can help you access a deeper stretch than the typical land-based yoga class while still being gentle and low-impact. Slings also make inversions, a very advanced skill on the mat and in the air, attainable for many beginners. Inversions in the sling are one of the best ways to help increase blood flow throughout the body and help the spine and surrounding ligaments decompress. Physical therapists and chiropractors love this apparatus for exactly this reason!

The aerial hammock is also incredibly versatile! It can be used for everything from healing and strengthening, to exciting dances and drops. Catch an aerial yoga class to help improve your flexibility, mobility, and joint health. Join us for a workout class and use the sling and your own body weight to help strengthen every muscle in your body. Sign up for a tricks class to learn cool skills, poses, and drops. Take a dance class to practice stringing together moves into fun dance sequences. The opportunities are endless!

Check out our class schedule for our full list of aerial sling classes! We’d love to have you!
