Movement for Longevity

“Movement is a medicine for creating change in a person's physical, mental and emotional state.”

-Carol Welch

We invite you to play and move for more than the short term. Fly Freak prioritizes low-impact workouts on the mat and in the air to keep you moving for the long haul.  Endorphins can offer clarity, strength, and the mental resolve it takes to carry on when we fight for equality. It is our hope that you can take the strength you build in class and use that strength to take action to stand up for others.

Changing the Brain (for Good!)

Movement like dance and yoga has been shown to reduce the risk of dementia and cognitive decline over time. With continued practice, these formats can have an overall change on the way your brain functions. Coming to class and moving consistently helps to build new neural pathways, adds greater grey matter volume (which helps aid in memory and movement) and reduces brain inflammation (which helps improve cognitive function). These are all key factors in long-term health.

So the next time you feel a little frustrated in class while you learn a new move, remember that this is all part of the process. Your brain is literally creating new neural pathways in real time. Longevity! Go Brains!

Supporting Our Bodies Over Time

Not only do Fly Freak classes challenge your mind, they support your body far outside of the studio. Every class helps to build your balance and coordination, which can help reduce fall risk over time and teach your body how to move more intentionally.

This same kind of movement also plays a big role in stress recovery and sleep quality. Regular exercise has been shown to lower key stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, while increasing slow-wave (or “deep”) sleep. This is the sleep phase that’s most important for physical recovery and nervous system regulation.

And a bonus for air-based movers; spinal health! Aerial workouts challenge our strength and flexibility without joint strain. This combination, plus our friend gravity, creates a natural spinal decompression, helping us to take far less trips to the chiropractor.

Overall it’s clear that movement supports your body now and in the long term.

Come Hang Out (And Build Your Long-Term Movement Routine!)

How do you develop long-term movement? It helps to remember that what people often consider a typical “workout” isn’t really what Fly Freak has to offer. We focus on non-judgmental, sustainable movement that tends to create radical joy. (Nothing is a guarantee in life.) Our students share in that belief and thanks to them, we have a beautiful and welcoming alternative-movement community.

Longevity is built through movement, consistency and community and we’re here for you when you’re ready to move with us.
